As I was dusting, I glanced at it on the wall.
The old fashioned bike.
A velocipede.
Large wheel in the front, with small handlebars and a seat.
Small wheel in the back…looking almost too small to hold any weight.
I have a replica of a velocipede hanging on the wall of my living room.
It is right near our grand piano.
It is there because of my dream.

I thought I was seeing things.
The car was coming down the opposite side of the road.
The man, driving the car, had no hands on the steering wheel.
His hands were above his head.
It reminded me of my bike.
I loved my purple bike.
It was a step above my old bike with the basket in the front and the bell on the handlebars.
It was a girl’s bike…when all the boys had banana seat bikes with tall handlebars.

There he was…coming down the street.
The motion of his arms was the first thing to catch my eye.
I had to look…but as nonchalantly as I could.
I didn’t want to stare.
He was boxing.
Shadow boxing.
Punching the air without an opponent.

I sit here at my computer and write as a massive manhunt is happening in Boston.
A search is ongoing for one of the suspects involved in the Boston Marathon bombing.
Boston is literally shut down and the region of Watertown is completely shut off.
Federal, state, and local authorities are engaged in a coordinated effort to bring this situation to an end.
I think of the families in the area…mothers with their children…essentially on lock down.
Days before, parents could guard their children’s hearts and eyes from the violence.
But today…with armored vehicles and weapons all around them…a glance out their windows brings all of this too close to home.

I always enjoyed playing the Memory game with my children.
Memory is a card game where all the cards are laid face down on a surface.
When it is your turn, you flip two cards over to see if they match.
If they match, you keep the pair…if they don’t match, you turn them over again.
It was always the game of choice with my children.
Since there were so many cards, I would split the pile in half when they were younger.
Then, we could play two games.

I remember driving in the car with my parents.
We were headed to an amusement park, and I couldn’t wait!
I am sure I asked the age old question, Are we there yet?…over and over.
I am sure they gave me answers that didn’t truly satisfy.
We played I Spy games…and probably sang songs as we drove.
I was about 7 or 8 years old at the time.

Wake up, O sleeper…wake up!
Like an ostrich in the sand.
Look around you and take note.
What is happening to our land?
Survival of the fittest is the norm.
No time for new life or for old.
A baby disposed of…no matter when.
A bill of goods we’ve been sold.

There I sat at the high school play,
Amazed at all the talent.
The singing and dancing all superb,
The director’s effort gallant.
Each of these students was playing a part,
They were not at all what they seemed.
They lived out the story before us.
The characters’ hopes and dreams.

I overheard the mothers talking as they edged their shopping carts towards one another.
Are you anxious to send them back?
I sure am…I can’t imagine the summer when they’re home all the time…
I assumed “they” were the little children at their feet.
I assumed “send them back” meant to pre-school and kindergarten.
It made me sad.

There’s nothing better than homemade iced tea.
Every other day I have to make another pitcher.
It is almost like the Goldilocks’ story for me…not too sweet…not too tart.
Just right!
Tea bags are added to the water after it boils.
The tea must steep for a while.
The amount of time depends on how strong you like your tea, and the type of tea you use.
After the desired time, lemon and sugar are added.
Everything is stirred together and ready to enjoy.
