Biff’s World

We needed a part for our heater.
It all began with an email from our electric company.
The email informed us that our bill was going to quite high.
Our usage was up tremendously.

It is just my husband and I at home now.
We are not doing anything different.
There is no extra laundry.
It is not the season for air conditioning.

Two Left Feet

It was three pairs of sneakers ago.
I went to the town that is our county seat.
I parked and walked to the running store.
I think it’s ironic that, as a walker, I get my sneakers at a running store.

I like to know that I’m getting the right shoe for me.
I appreciate that all the sales people know a lot about running shoes.
They know a lot about the shoes that are best for walking as well.
I like to know that I am fitted properly.

A Modern Parable

One day she decided that she didn’t like the placement of her eye.
An eye can be an eye anywhere, she thought.
How convenient if one eye was on the side of my head.
She purposed to find someone who could move the eye for her.

Many others felt that the eye was perfect where it was.
God designed it that way, they said over and over.
The woman who wanted her eye moved found others who wanted their eye moved.
They banded together, with loud voices, and relentlessly tried to change people’s minds.

The Contrast

Everyone has experienced compliments.
You may be the one giving the compliment.
You may be the one receiving the compliment.
Compliments bring about all sorts of responses.

Sometimes, a compliment can make you feel a bit uncomfortable.
You don’t know quite what to do with it.
You are grateful for it but you don’t want to be the center of attention.
In those cases, just a simple thank you will do.

Wake Or Woke

Did you ever watch a young child draw a person?
Usually, the head will be extremely large.
The arms and legs will be very tiny.
The arms and legs will seem to come out of the head itself.

This is developmentally normal for a young child.
They will learn soon enough that arms attach at the shoulders.
They will learn that there is a torso from which the legs attach.
They will learn.

A Fresh Eye

My youngest daughter is interning all summer in the city.
She will be serving for twelve weeks.
Four of those weeks have already been completed.
After three weeks of preparation, the students arrived for their week of service.

All throughout the summer, youth groups will come to serve in various aspects of this ministry.
There is Kids Camp, which runs all day long throughout the summer.
There is Home Repair, which sends teams out to work on homes in the area.
There is Mercy Ministry, which meets practical needs in the community.

Beauty

I sat at a table with four other women.
We were at the women’s social at our church.
It is an annual event.
I looked around the room and saw a hundred women enjoying food and fellowship.

We were blessed by a speaker whose honesty and transparency was so refreshing.
We were blessed as we joined in song.
We were blessed just by being together.
It was so apparent to me that we women need each other.

Christian Enough

I have a confession.
I listened to my first Christmas album of the this season today.
I am not advocating celebrating Christmas before we celebrate Thanksgiving.
I am not trying to blend the holidays all together so each is unrecognizable.

If truth be told, I will begin to listen to Christmas music in a few weeks.
We decorate the house the day after Thanksgiving.
On that day and until December 26, Christmas music will be wafting through the house.
I had a distinct reason that I listened to a Christmas album today as I drove around.

The Exhibit

I took two of my daughters to a wonderful exhibit.
We drove into Philadelphia and went to the Franklin Institute.
The Franklin Institute is a science museum that was founded in 1824.
It is one of the oldest centers of science education and development in the United States.

Th Franklin Institute is named after Benjamin Franklin.
Franklin is a well known scientist and statesman.
As soon as we walked in the door, we saw the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial.
I was here when I was a girl, I told my daughters, and I walked through the heart.
