The Threshold

We step over it many times a day.
People come up to it, when they want to approach us.
We may even be carried over it, on our wedding day.

The doorstep.
The threshold.

For many, the threshold is the line to be crossed.
Family members step over it with ease.
Good friends are able to cross it without so much as a knock at the door.

Darkness That Can Be Felt

So many children are afraid of the dark.
Something unknown is lurking in the corners.
Something sinister is hiding in the shadows.

Our living room is painted a deep cranberry red.
It is warm and inviting with the old wood furniture pieces and the hardwood floors.
It is one of my favorite rooms.

Sugar Snow

There was a dusting of snow on the ground.
How could that be?
It is already spring!

The Little House series of books, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, were always favorites of ours.
Every time I see snow in early spring, I think of Sugar Snow.
Little Laura thought that Sugar Snow was literally sweet snow that you could eat.
Pa explained how it got that name.

No Substitutes

My daughter, the teacher, borrowed items from my baking cabinet.
Her second graders are learning about measurement.
Things that I don’t use all the time were taken.
Things that have duplicates were taken as well.

Except one item…Baking Powder.
My husband’s birthday was on the weekend and I was making his cake.
I reached into the cabinet to get the baking powder and it was gone.
For some reason, I did not have any more in my cabinet.

Not So Simple Additions

I went through the self-checkout.
I put the zucchini on the scale in order to weigh it.
I was making a favorite recipe for dinner and wanted everything to be fresh.

I needed four large zucchini.
The prompts popped up on the screen and I dutifully answered.
Customer card…check.
Container…Plastic bag.

Under The Radar

Posted in Salvation | 2 Comments

I was on the phone this morning with a sweet woman.
She is in the hospital and the phone is the best way to connect with her right now.
It is so easy to get discouraged when you feel cut off from everyone.
It is so easy to struggle with your outlook when circumstances affect your perspective.

We talked about many things.
I listened to many things.
I wanted to hug her through the phone and tell her it will be alright.
My words and my heart…coming through…had to be enough.

Round Lettuce

Posted in Salvation | 2 Comments

I do our main food shopping once a week.
I usually have to go back for milk and produce.
I needed to run to the store for bananas and mixed greens.

I enjoy making a salad for lunch.
Mixed greens, red and green peppers, radish, celery, tomato, grapes, garbanzo beans, black olives, feta cheese, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds sprinkled on top!
Homemade olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing.

As I was buying my mixed greens, I was suddenly fifteen…shopping at the grocery store.

Our Banner

If you ever come to my house, you will always see a seasonal flag flying.
There is something about them that always looks so inviting.
Since it is March, a St. Patrick’s Day flag is hanging, with a bright green shamrock.
Last month, it was a pink heart for Valentine’s Day.
I have had many of my flags for years and they are still in good condition.

I do have my favorites.
One flag I really liked was purchased in Lancaster County, PA.
It looked like an Amish quilt.
A storm came up very quickly one day, and I never got a chance to take the flag down.
My Amish quilt flag was torn…and I have never been able to find another one like it.

The Scapegoat

Prince Horace was incorrigible.
Behind his back he was known as Prince Brat.
As terrible as he was, it was forbidden to spank a Prince.

The King solved this discipline problem with an orphan boy, named Jeremy.
Jeremy was brought into the palace, from the streets, and kept in the castle.
This common boy was to be punished in the Prince’s place.
Jeremy was the whipping boy.

The Single Seed

My daughter and I went out for lunch today.
We had delicious salads and unsweetened iced tea with lemon.
As I took my first sip through the straw, I inadvertently swallowed a small lemon seed.

I laughed and reminisced.

When I was a small girl, watermelons were a much anticipated summer treat.
I couldn’t wait to bite into the juicy goodness of the pink center.
I always made sure I never ate the watermelon too close to the rind.
It always seemed too bitter.
