Our Banner

If you ever come to my house, you will always see a seasonal flag flying.
There is something about them that always looks so inviting.
Since it is March, a St. Patrick’s Day flag is hanging, with a bright green shamrock.
Last month, it was a pink heart for Valentine’s Day.
I have had many of my flags for years and they are still in good condition.

I do have my favorites.
One flag I really liked was purchased in Lancaster County, PA.
It looked like an Amish quilt.
A storm came up very quickly one day, and I never got a chance to take the flag down.
My Amish quilt flag was torn…and I have never been able to find another one like it.

The Scapegoat

Prince Horace was incorrigible.
Behind his back he was known as Prince Brat.
As terrible as he was, it was forbidden to spank a Prince.

The King solved this discipline problem with an orphan boy, named Jeremy.
Jeremy was brought into the palace, from the streets, and kept in the castle.
This common boy was to be punished in the Prince’s place.
Jeremy was the whipping boy.

The Single Seed

My daughter and I went out for lunch today.
We had delicious salads and unsweetened iced tea with lemon.
As I took my first sip through the straw, I inadvertently swallowed a small lemon seed.

I laughed and reminisced.

When I was a small girl, watermelons were a much anticipated summer treat.
I couldn’t wait to bite into the juicy goodness of the pink center.
I always made sure I never ate the watermelon too close to the rind.
It always seemed too bitter.

Already and Not Yet

Posted in Salvation | 2 Comments

My youngest daughter is choosing her classes for next year.
It will be her senior year in high school.
She will be taking physics as her science class.
My daughter is very creative.
Even though she does well, science is not her favorite subject.

I remember taking physics in high school.
I remember thinking that it was an applicable science.
It still did not interest me as much as writing stories or reading books.

The Valentine

The mail came.
There was a small envelope addressed to me.
I opened it up to find a valentine.
A simple card…signed only with Your secret admirer.

I was a sophomore in high school.
I kept that card in my room trying to imagine who could have sent it to me.
There was a boy I admired from afar…
But he was quiet…studious.
It couldn’t be from him!

Bubble Gloves

My youngest daughter is home sick today with a fever.
A dear friend checked in with me to see if there was anything I needed at the store.
It was so sweet of her…but I had already gone food shopping…while my daughter slept.

I remember the days when I couldn’t do that.
Days when my children were too young to be left alone.
I was never a big temperature taker when they had a fever.
A mother knows when her child is sick.
Their eyes don’t dance!

Wiggling Fingers

Have you ever noticed that children do not know how to tell time on an analog clock?
Since most clocks are digital, learning to tell time on a face clock seems outdated for some.
You must be very intentional to teach children how to tell time this way.
I think it makes it more visual for them…and helps them understand increments of time.

I admire old clocks….especially when they chime.
A dear friend of mine does not like the sound of a chiming clock.
Hearing the chime every fifteen minutes is too much for her.

Lost and Found

There were two, older women my mother would invite to our home for Sunday dinner.
They were sisters and they lived in a beautiful old house in the city.
To this day, I do not know if they had ever married…or they were widowed.
They were almost like aunts to my mother…and by default, great-aunts to me.

They were very sweet.
They knitted and crocheted beautifully.
They made me a lovely afghan for my bed…and always brought presents when they visited.

Out Of Place

I met a friend and her daughter for breakfast the other morning.
I tried to give myself enough time to finish things here and get there on time.
I don’t know about you…but I always think I can do that one more thing!

That one more thing sometimes makes me five minutes late.
I made up my mind that this particular morning…I would not do that one more thing.
I planned to arrive on time…perhaps a bit earlier.

I was very delighted that things were moving along.
This just might be the morning!

Germs

Posted in Salvation | 2 Comments

This winter has brought its fair share of germs.
Colds, coughs, fevers, achy-ness.
Getting rest, drinking fluids, washing hands more often is mandatory.
Germs will find you when you least expect it.

Having five children, I remember when everyone seemed to get sick at the same time.
Sometimes a few would be sick at once, but often it went down the line…one after another.
As a mother, I always felt as if I wanted to open every window in the house.
Let the fresh air in…and the stale air out.
