Baby On The Move

Posted in Family Life | 2 Comments

My grandson will be one-year-old right after the New Year.
This means he is on the verge of walking.
With four granddaughters, having a grandson is wonderfully different.
The expression, all boy, comes to mind.

Electric cords appear like shiny objects to him.
If there is a tiny space between a table and chair, he will find it and enter it.
If there is something to climb, he will.
I love every minute of his curiosity.

It was a video my son-in-love sent that made me laugh.
This dude is on the move was the caption.
It was my grandson in a walker going at a fast pace all around the house.
My daughter’s home has a lot of hardwood floors, which made it easier for him.

He power walked.
He would hit a wall and I would hear my daughter say, Are you stuck?
If he was stuck, it was not for long.
He would reverse, change course, and get going again.

To watch his little feet and his impish grin made me laugh so hard.
It also made me wonder about when he came to Grandma’s house with his sisters for the day.
I knew I would need to put gates up, since we have front and back stairs.
I knew I would have to get the walker down and have it available.

Putting him in the walker at this stage was sheer necessity.
If my daughter was vacuuming, he would try to get the vacuum.
She decided to put him in the walker to keep him safe during that time.
He liked it because he could move faster than when he crawled.

Even though they have two daughters as well, no one was one-year-old near Christmas.
Their two daughters were born in the spring.
My daughter actually put a wooden gate around their Christmas tree.
Shiny lights, electrical cords, and glittering ornaments are now safely out of reach.

These precious three grandchildren came over one morning last week.
Their mommy was going to have an uninterrupted day of Christmas shopping.
What a joy to see their faces as they looked at all of Grandma’s Christmas decorations.
Gates were strategically placed; the walker was ready.

Before his morning nap, he crawled everywhere.
He played with favorite toys.
He tried to play with his sisters, but I put them in my husband’s office.
A dollhouse, with all the tiny accessories, was thrilling for them but dangerous for him.

After his morning nap and while I made lunch, I put him in the walker.
This dude is on the move does not even begin to capture it.
He bumped into the kitchen cabinets, changed course, and moved on.
We walked over to the oven door and talked to the baby he saw there.

He walked over to my Hoosier cabinet and played with the round doorknobs.
He walked into the dining room and the foyer just to look around.
I figured he was fine on the hardwood floors but would find the carpet difficult.
I couldn’t be more wrong; he maneuvered the carpet with ease.

Lunch was at the island with my granddaughters.
My grandson was in the high chair.
After lunch, it was play time.
I got down on the kitchen floor with him so he could stand up against me.

He loves to snuggle and he gives the sweetest hugs.
We sang songs.
He played with spoons on the kitchen floor.
We talked to our reflections in the oven door.

When I got up, my black walking pants were dusty with crumbs here and there.
My clean house, by all appearances, had things on the floor I never saw.
I keep a clean house but always tease, don’t look at my windows.
Fingerprints and little kisses are all there, at a child’s level.

I love it.
It’s supposed to be that way when there are children and grandchildren around.
I guess crumbs on the kitchen floor is par for the course.
It shows a lot of life is happening here.

Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.
(Psalm 127:4,5)

Children are a blessing.
Children are arrows in the hands of a warrior.
Dirty windows, crumbs on the floor, gates at staircases, and walkers careening about are gifts.
I am grateful for these children and do not take this time for granted.

I want them to remember Grandma’s house with great love and affection.
As God allows, I want to make many memories with them here.
There is always room for one more.
Or two, or three, or…

  1. Yes Gina. Boys are far different in their behaviors. What a precious gift from God are your grands. Frank and I spend every moment we can with our 4 grandboys. Merry Christmas dear Gina.

    • Nancy,
Yes, children are gifts from God, uniquely made by Him and for Him. I am sure you love every minute you spend with your grandchildren. Have a Blessed Christmas.
