Motion Detector

We were away for the weekend.
We were visiting our son and daughter-in-love in Virginia.
It is always wonderful to worship at their church while we are there.
It is always so nice to eat meals together and have long talks.

My husband likes to help each of our children with things around their house.
Being very handy, he encourages them to “make a list.”
There may be a few things that need attention requiring tools my husband has in his workshop.
He loaded the tools he needed in the back of his pickup truck.

I was able to help my daughter-in-love with a few things as well.
It was a productive weekend.
It was a lovely weekend.
They made delicious meals for us.

As we were sitting on the sofa, an alert came up on both of our phones.
It was our security system.
There was motion detected in our foyer.
There was a red circle next to the notification.

I wanted to call my friend, who lives down the street, to ask her if anything was amiss.
My husband wanted to go through the notifications and check the timing of the event.
We know where the motion detector is located.
Whatever moved, only moved once; it never went past the detector again.

We have a few other motion detectors, but none of them picked up any movement.
The alarm had sounded, but we can turn that off with our phones.
It is a two story foyer and I have old tins on top of two coat closets that are there.
I have a deacon’s bench with a pillow and old bear in the foyer, along with a hall tree.

In my mind, there was nothing that could have randomly fell over.
It could not have been a person, since none of the other detectors picked up any motion.
There was nothing we could do.
We just had to trust and wait until we got home.

I thought about it off and on all weekend.
Perhaps, it was an anomaly.
Perhaps, a bird flew near the large window and cast a shadow.
Perhaps, it was a mouse that scurried across the floor.

I would forget about it and then my husband would mention it again.
We were three hours away from home.
We were with our son and daughter-in-love.
There was absolutely nothing we could do.

I could have asked one of my daughters to go over and check things out.
However, if there was a problem, I did not want them to be harmed in any way.
That was the same reason I didn’t call my neighbor.
People are more important than things.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Mathew 6:19-21)

We are to hold things of this world loosely.
We are to know where our true treasure is found.
I know that in my head and in my heart.
However, my heart was sad and a bit concerned about what might meet us at home.

The weekend ended and we drove back to Pennsylvania.
The drive was longer because of traffic.
My husband stopped to get gas for his truck.
We finally arrived home well over the three hours it usually takes us.

We went inside together.
Nothing was amiss.
Nothing was misplaced.
Everything looked just like it did when we left.

We have no idea what motion was detected in our foyer.
I think my mouse idea is the most feasible.
I was very grateful that everything was fine.
Something was “watching” when we could not see for ourselves.

I thought about the fact that God sees everything at all times, in all places.
There is nothing beyond His sight.
There is nothing beyond His understanding.
How blessed we are.

I cannot imagine having God’s perspective.
I have notifications silenced on my phone.
I only allow text messages and security information to come through.
I can’t imagine having beeps and sounds going off all the time.

I don’t have the capacity to handle all of that; none of us really do.
God sees and hears all of us as if there was only one of us.
God is attentive to our cry and to our needs.
God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent.

God knows everything.
God is all powerful and can do anything.
God is everywhere at the same time.
He is God, after all.

We can rest easy.
Even if…we can rest easy.
Even when…we can rest easy.
Even still…we can rest easy.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)
