A Necklace Of Life

Posted in Family Life | 2 Comments

It was Mother’s Day.
We had celebrated the day before, since it was my granddaughter’s third birthday.
It was primarily a birthday celebration, as it should be.
However, there was an acknowledgement of the mothers who were there.

The actual day was filled with phone calls and texts.
My oldest daughter prepared a delicious dinner for me.
It was a day with a lovely nap in my favorite chair.
It was a day with hot tea right around my usual tea time.

When I got up in the morning, I came downstairs to find my husband already in the kitchen.
There was a beautiful bouquet of roses on the kitchen island.
There was a sweet card, which touched my heart.
There was also a small wrapped box.

I opened the box to find a necklace.
It was a gold heart with five charms on it.
The charms were not for my children; I already have a mother’s ring that I wear all the time.
The charms were for my grandchildren.

Their names were etched on each charm.
The gift was so special to me.
We can add more charms with each new grandbaby, my husband told me.
We can even get another heart if we need to, he added, smiling.

There was something about the gift that was so wonderful to me.
We currently have four grandchildren.
Our fifth grandchild is due this week.
My husband included our fifth grandchild on the necklace.

My son and daughter-in-love found out the gender of this baby.
We have known and prayed for this child by name all through the pregnancy.
The name of this, already loved, already prayed for, grandchild is on one of the charms.
It meant the world to me.

I thought about what my husband did by including this child.
This little one is a person from conception.
This little one is alive and growing inside my daughter-in-love for the past nine months.
This little one is simply on the other side for a few more days.

The womb has been a nurturing place for this little one until birth.
This child is real to all of us.
This child is talked about and longed for by each person in our family.
This child is sung to, and talked to, and caressed through her mommy’s belly.

When this child is born, we will all feel as if we have known this little one all along.
We have known this little sweetheart even though we have not met face to face.
This little one knows the voice of my daughter-in-love and my son.
This little one knows the voice of my granddaughter, who will be an excellent big sister.

Adding this child to my necklace is no small thing to me.
It is a statement of love.
It is a testimony to life.
It is a proclamation of the gift this child is to all of us.

Life in the womb is miraculous.
The gift of motherhood is to be cherished.
Only a woman, made in God’s image, can carry and give birth to a child, made in God’s image.
Motherhood is the hardest, most rewarding job a woman will ever do.

This little one has a wonderful daddy.
He gives the greatest gift to his children: he loves their mommy.
He loves his wife well.
He loves his children deeply and sacrificially.

As everyone was leaving here after the birthday celebration, my son came up and hugged me.
Next time you see us, the baby will be here.
He’s right; we both know that the baby has been here all along.
This little one has been part of our family from the moment their joyful news was shared.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart…
(Jeremiah 1:5)

Every child in the womb is created by God.
Every child in the womb is known by God.
Every child in the womb has a purpose.
Every child in the womb has a soul.

Life is precious.
Life is to be protected.
Life is to be cherished.
Life is the greatest gift.

I have a charm on my heart necklace for a grandchild soon to be born.
I cannot wait.
So many books to read, hugs to share, and stories to tell.
So much wonder to discover together.

Amen and Amen.
