A Little Rest

Posted in Family Life | 12 Comments

I remember when my husband was interviewing for jobs.
It was during our senior year of college.
We got engaged at Christmas that year.
Our wedding was to be in October.

He traveled all over the country for those job interviews.
He went to Georgia Tech, which meant we were apart for most of our four years of college.
He came home or I would go down to Georgia to see him for homecoming and formals.
We were high school sweethearts, so we had a foundation before he ever left for school.

He came to the conclusion, during the interview process, that he wanted to stay local.
He didn’t want us to use our vacations to come home to visit family.
He had a few job offers, but chose the job in our state.
It was on this day, forty years ago, that my husband began that new job.

We looked for an apartment for him to live in so that he could be closer to work.
I would move in after the wedding.
We usually saw each other once during the week and then on weekends.
October couldn’t come fast enough.

My husband worked hard and was quite good at what he did.
He moved up through the company.
He has had quite a career and is well respected in his company and in his industry.
In three days, my husband officially retires.

He has worked forty years for his company.
Forty years of making a difference.
Forty years of innovation.
Forty years of working hard for our family.

He is not the expected age of retirement; he is younger.
He has gone sixty-two times around the sun.
I tease him because for four months each year, I am younger than him.
Four months each year that I never let him forget.

I am proud of my husband and his accomplishments.
I am thankful that his hard work enabled me to stay home with my children.
Now, it is the next chapter.
Covid and lock downs gave us a taste of what retirement will be like with him at home each day.

God, in His grace, gave us a glimpse of that time.

This is a celebratory week.
We will be going on a family vacation soon as well.
This is time for me to step back a bit and enjoy this new season as it unfolds.
For that reason, I am taking some time off from writing.

I have been writing these Whispers since March 6, 2012.
I think time off is a good thing.
I need the refreshment.
I need the time to focus on my husband.

We will get into the rhythm of retirement.
I know I need some space to do just that.
There will be no new Whispers until after Labor Day.
As God allows, Whispers Of His Movement will resume on Tuesday, September 7.

There are always the Whispers’ archives for you to peruse.
You can use the drop down menu to choose a Whisper from a certain category.
You can start at the beginning and read through.
You can look at the article index and choose a title that intrigues you.

I hope that you and I return on September 7 with a new outlook.
I pray that you and I will continue to listen to God as He whispers to us each day.
Missing each other is a good thing.
I will miss hearing from you as I hope you will miss reading new Whispers.

Blessings and joy until we come together in ten weeks, as God allows.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24–26)

Whispers of His Movement and Whispers in Verse books are now available in paperback and e-book!
