The Road Sign

Posted in Faith | 4 Comments

My two-year-old granddaughter was here over the weekend.
She stayed a few more days, which gave her Mommy and Daddy some time to themselves.
I brought her back home.
She loved riding in Grandma’s car.

She had her cup of milk in the cup holder of her car seat.
She had a little container of goldfish in the other cup holder.
I put on her favorite music, which made her smile.
I could see her in my rear view mirror.

She saw cows and told me so.
She saw big trucks and made me aware of them, as if I didn’t see them as I drove.
She was thoroughly enjoying the ride.
Every so often, during our car ride,  I told her that Grandma loves her.

We have a certain thing we do together.
It’s a simple answer to a question.
How much does Grandma love you?
We both put our arms out as wide as we can and say, This much!

I saw her in the rear view mirror when I was at a traffic light.
How much does Grandma love you?
She put her cup of milk and her container of goldfish in the cup holders.
This much, she said with her arms out as wide as she possibly could put them.

I was on the turnpike for a short stretch of time.
I saw orange construction signs, which were covered with a brown cloth.
I assumed that whatever work they were doing was completed or not being done that day.
It was the next road sign I saw that intrigued me.

I had never seen a sign worded in this way.
I had seen signs that said, uneven pavement.
I had seen signs that said, no shoulder.
The words on this sign were different.

Rough road ahead.
What could that mean?
Was it literally a rough surface that I would detect as I drove along?
Was it a warning that had more significance?

I drove over some little rough patches, but they were nothing like the sign suggested.
I pondered that sign for quite a while.
Wouldn’t it be nice if life came with such a warning?
If life did come with such a warning, would we heed those words?

If we knew what lay ahead, would it change anything?
Aren’t you glad you don’t know?
Aren’t you glad that the Sovereign God of the universe knows where all the rough roads are?
We have a Heavenly Father who loves us, and cares for us, and who never leaves us.

God our Father never leaves us on the good roads or the rough roads.
Not for a second.
Never do we travel alone.
Even if we feel alone at times, we have to tell ourselves the Truth that He is always with us.

I thought of the sign again the next day when my two other granddaughters were over.
Their Mommy had a busy morning and they had a morning with Grandma.
They know that Pop-Pop is here.
They know that Pop-Pop is in his office working.

They played with toys that were on the floor and heard their Pop-Pop’s voice.
The both went over to the glass doors that go into his office.
The doors were closed, but they could still see him.
Hi, Pop-Pop, they said while they waved through the glass.

He waved back to them which made them wave some more.
I went into the living room another way and took a picture of the two of them.
They wanted to be near their Pop-Pop even if the glass separated them from him temporarily.
They dropped a teddy bear and a blanket, which they didn’t need, since they were near to him.

Rough road ahead.
Maybe.
Possibly.
Inevitably, at some point in their life.

All three of my granddaughters have their Mommy and Daddy to protect them.
All three of my granddaughters have their Pop-Pop and Grandma to keep them safe.
They have aunts and uncles and other grandparents who love them.
We are there for the rough patches in the road.

But we can’t be with them every minute.
Isn’t it wonderful to know that God is there?
He created them; He knows their tender little hearts.
He loves them more than any of us do, and we love them fiercely.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. (Psalm 46:1-3)

God is our God for the rough roads.
God is our God for the good roads.
God is with us even when we have loved ones nearby.
God is with us when we find ourselves totally alone.

Rough roads ahead.
We need not fear.
Our Father God is near.
He is our ever-present help in trouble.
