The Driving Evangelist

Posted in Evangelism | 2 Comments

I saw the car way ahead of me on the road.
I noticed there was colorful writing on the back window.
Since the car was a mini van, the back window provided a large canvas.
I intended to read what the writing said when I got closer.

Within minutes, I was directly behind the mini van.
I saw two stick figures drawn on the back window.
One stick figure was sad.
The other stick figure was smiling.

I noticed that this was not just a picture, it was an equation.
It was an equation without numbers.
There was a plus sign between the two stick figures.
Something was drawn between them.

That something was drawn after the plus sign.
That something was added to the sad stick figure.
This addition changed the stick figure from sad to happy.
The something that was added to the equation was the Bible.

A picture of an open Bible was drawn between the two stick figures.
I noticed that there was more detail to the two stick figures.
The sad stick figure had a square where his torso would be.
The square was empty.

The happy stick figure also had a square torso in which a red heart was drawn.
Under each stick figure were words that explained their condition.
EMPTY was written under the sad stick figure.
FILLED WITH GOD’S LOVE was written under the happy stick figure.

A theologian may dismiss the drawing and say it is much too simple.
It didn’t clarify the transformation that takes place when a person comes to faith in Jesus.
That theologian would be missing the point.
This was intended to simply and creatively tell the Gospel on the back window of a mini van.

The equation was simple.
Without God, we are empty.
With God, we are full.
What is added to the equation so that we are filled with God’s love?

The driver drew an open Bible in the equation.
We know God through His Word.
We know God’s redemptive plan through His Word.
We cannot know Truth without God’s Word.

I smiled at the simple drawings.
I smiled at the Truth conveyed on the back window.
Jesus is the Word.
Jesus is God and God is love.

In simple drawings, Truth was displayed.
Someone might see this and wonder why the Bible was in the equation.
Someone might see this and notice a difference between the two stick figures.
Someone might see this and notice the red heart inside the smiling stick figure.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26)

The sad stick figure was empty with a heart of stone.
The happy stick figure was filled with God’s love and had a new heart.
God uses His Word to captivate us.
God uses His Word to let us know who He is and who we are.

Apart from Him we can do nothing. (John 15:5)
We are empty.
When we come to faith in Jesus alone for our salvation, we are filled with His Spirit.
The red heart drawn on the window was so vibrant, it appeared to be beating.

I drove behind this mini van until an intersection where we were going opposite ways.
I pulled up alongside so I could make a left turn.
I wanted to see the driver.
I wanted to smile and encourage the driver in some way.

That was not to happen, since the light turned green.
The woman driver drove on, while I waited to turn.
The driving evangelist, I found myself saying.
How I wish I could have talked to her.

We don’t have to draw the Gospel on the back window of our cars.
We don’t have to carry signs and placards with Bible verses.
We do have to go and tell, but how we do that, looks different for each one of us.
The Message and the Truth are the same, but there are many ways to go and tell.

God wired each of us a certain way and gave us gifts to use for Him.
None of us have the option to do nothing.
Some of us love to pray and that is vitally important.
Some of us might write a note or call someone and that is so needed.

Some of us can teach, or write, or make music all to His Glory.
Some of us are raising children for the Lord.
Some of us are care givers, sacrificially giving of ourselves in His name.
Some of us are the draw the Gospel on the car window kind of person.

God gifted each of us uniquely.
There are many ways to obey the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
Go and tell in your own unique way.
Do not deviate from the Message; tell it the best way you know how.

Thank you, driving evangelist.
You challenged me.
How will you go and tell?
The world needs to hear.
