You Can Always Tell

She stood in front of me in line.
I figured she was about my daughter’s age.
She looked so comfortable in her leggings and long tunic sweatshirt.
I was eager to get home and change into my comfy clothes as well.

She was wearing sneakers.
I made a mental note that this is my attire most mornings.
There is something about comfort.
It is worth the wardrobe change.

Then it started.
She began to sway side to side.
I noticed the crisscross strap that I originally thought was part of her purse.
Now I knew differently.

I saw the tiny little shoe protruding from the crisscross strap.
She had a baby carrier on the front of her.
She continued to sway side to side.
You can always tell; she was doing the Mommy Rock.

Every mother knows how to do this special dance.
No dance is as important as this one.
I truly believe the Mommy Rock is instinctive.
No lessons are necessary.

I smiled.
I remembered.
Mothers do the Mommy Rock without thinking.
It needs no demonstration.

I wanted to say something to her, since her dance made me smile.
I can help the next person, the cashier pleasantly said.
The young mother walked without swaying to the cash register.
I was called next.

We both finished at the same time.
I looked over at her sleeping baby.
She saw me looking and we both smiled.
I saw you doing the Mommy Rock, I said to her.

She laughed a true belly laugh.
I always do it, she admitted.
I found myself swaying side to side at work and my baby was not even with me, she admitted.
The Mommy Rock never goes away,
I told her, I have done it as well.

Now I have grandbabies and do the Mommy Rock with them, I confessed.
I made a mental note to decide if I should call it the Grandma Rock.
I just wanted you to know that you made me smile, I said.
Thank you for telling me that; I do love being a mom, she said enthusiastically.

Isn’t it funny how the Mommy Rock comes right back?
There is no learning curve.
Your feet just seem to know what to do.
It soothes the baby and perhaps the mother as well.

There should be a song about the Mommy Rock.
Perhaps a lullaby that can accompany the swaying side to side.
No lyrics are necessary.
The Mommy Rock is universal.

Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (1 John 2:6)

When we are believers in the Lord Jesus, we have a certain walk.
Our walk is unmistakable.
At least it should be.
Like the Mommy Rock, our walk in Christ should be recognizable.

Our walk in Christ is one that can be imitated as people watch us.
Even when they cannot see our face, our walk should give us away.
That’s a follower of Jesus, they remark.
I can tell.

Our walk should always be going in His direction.
Our walk should point others towards Him.
Our walk should be consistent with our talk.
Our walk is not perfect; there may be a stumble or two, but we always press on.

We always press on.
