Love Came Down

Posted in Christmas | Leave a comment

Toddlers constantly crane their necks.
They spend their days looking up.
Everything is above them.
Everything is out of reach.

We adults might not remember what it was like to be a child.
A person’s knees were the only thing right at our level.
No wonder children can get bored during a conversation.
No one is looking at them; no one takes the time to talk to them.

My oldest granddaughter made me smile on Thanksgiving Day.
She came multiple times into the kitchen and wrapped her arms around my knees.
I reached down and hugged her; I told her how much Grandma loves her.
I wiggled my knees back and forth so she would wiggle, too.

Wiggles and giggles were the order of the day.

You can tell a lot about a person by the way they talk to children.
So many adults stay at their full height when talking to a child.
That posture makes the grownup seem aloof to the child.
That child will not engage with them quite as much.

The adults that come down to the child’s level to talk to them, always touch my heart.
They bend down so that they can talk to the child eye to eye.
Children appreciate that posture.
It must be awful to talk to someone’s knees all day long.

Perhaps an adult with a bad back cannot bend down to talk to a child.
However, I have been around adults who seem to think bending down is beneath them.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
It takes a big person to come down.

If a mother took stock of all the times she came down during the day, she would be amazed.
She comes down to lift her baby out of the crib.
She comes down to lift her child up into the high chair.
She comes down to give her child a bath.

She comes down to tie her child’s shoes.
She comes down to play with a special toy on the floor.
She comes down to read a favorite book.
She comes down to kiss her child goodnight.

A mother spends her days coming down.
It is a posture of service.
It is a posture of tenderness.
It is a posture of humility.

For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:38-40)

There is One who came down.
There is One who always was, always is, and always will be.
There is One who was with His Father in glory.
There is One who laid everything aside so He could come down.

It takes a big Person to come down to the level of a child.
It takes Someone special to come down to look that child in the eye.
It takes a humble Servant to come down to serve and not to be served.
It takes a loving Savior to come down, only to be lifted up on a cross.

Love came down at Christmas.
Love wanted to talk to us face to face.
Love wanted to look into our eyes so we would see how much He loves us.
Love wanted to come down and wash our feet so we would learn to do the same.

Love came down at Christmas.
And we stand up.
And we think that posture is beneath us.
A child knows the difference.

We have a Savior who is not aloof.
We have a Savior who came down.
We have a Savior who came down so we could be lifted up.
We have a precious Savior.

How can you come down today?
Jesus has shown us the Way.
Coming down to serve another is a way we exalt our Lord Jesus.
In the coming down, He is lifted up.

Christmas Eve, 2 am
Heavy snow is falling down
And the streets clothed in white
Echo songs that were sung by candlelight

We’re alive, we can breathe
But do we really care for this world in need?
There’s a choice we must make each and every day

So close your eyes and share the dream
Let everyone on earth believe
The child was born, the stars shone bright
And love came down at Christmas time
And love came down at Christmas time

So merry Christmas everyone
And peace throughout the year
The time has come to celebrate
So let your voices fill the air
Everyone, watch and pray that the sun will shine on a brighter day
Join your hands, lift them high
For this gift of life

When love came down at Christmas time
When love came down at Christmas time
When love came down at Christmas time
When love came down at Christmas time

So close your eyes and share the dream
Let everyone on earth believe
The child was born, the stars shone bright
And love came down at Christmas time
And love came down at Christmas time
