Only A Mother

Posted in Motherhood | 6 Comments

This poem was originally published on May 12, 2012.

Only a mother knows the tear, the silent one that falls,
Only a mother knows for sure, the reason for it all.

Only a mother knows the pain, and hand and hand, the joy.
Only a mother knows the kiss of her precious little boy.

Only a mother knows how to tie the bows in her little girl’s hair.
Only a mother knows where to look for that long lost teddy bear.

Only a mother knows the excuses…she’s heard them all before.
Only a mother saves all the cards that say what they love her for.

Only a mother knows how to give, till she runs out of things to give.
Only a mother knows that in fact, that’s the only way to live.

Only a mother knows how to juggle a myriad of things.
Only a mother knows the song that only a mother can sing.

Only a mother will put herself last, and let the others be first.
Only a mother knows just the right things to quench that unquenchable thirst.

Only a mother can kiss what hurts…if only for all of their years.
Only a mother knows what to say to lessen all of their fears.

Only a mother knows that one day she will watch them walk away.
Only a mother knows that in truth, she really wants them to stay.

Only a mother knows that her love was so strong and so utterly real.
Only a mother knows that to stand, you must be willing to kneel.

Only a mother knows that she gained much more than she ever had lost.
Only a mother would do it again, even when counting the cost.

Only a mother can take all the pain and all of the joy and the fears.
Only a mother tucks them away…the gift of those priceless years.

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her; Many women do noble things but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:25-30)

This is for all the mothers, grandmothers, mothers-in-law, and mothers-to-be.
This is for the women who stepped in, at just the right time, when a mother wasn’t there.
You are doing the most important job…a job that has eternal benefits.
You are raising the next generation for HIM.
Blessings and honor are yours.

  1. Just came upon this older post as I was cleaning out my ‘saved box’ of emails. So beautifully written, Gina, as it takes ‘only a mother’ to know such thoughts and put them into beautiful words as you have done so well! Thank you!

    • Oh, Carolyn, I love when older Whispers are found! I am so delighted you were blessed by this one.
