Writing On the Walls

Posted in Worship | Leave a comment

After two weddings last summer, two weeks apart, this is the spring of houses.
Each couple has purchased their first home.
My daughter and her husband just settled on their home.
They are thrilled to begin making memories there; they are eager to see what God will do.

Each couple knows that their house belongs to God.
It is truly His house.
The world will mockingly say, Well then, let God pay the mortgage.
Each couple can just smile, knowing that their jobs are God’s provision for them.

The world cannot understand what they mean when they say that it is God’s house.
Is it a church, one may ask.
Did God move in?
The answer is, yes, God did move in as the most important resident.

I saw the picture on Instagram and Facebook.
I read the post.
I enlarged the picture to read it for myself.
The words blessed my heart.

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. (Proverbs 24:3,4)

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
(1 Corinthians 3:11)

Two verses were written out in separate handwriting.
I knew my daughter’s handwriting right away.
I recognized the other handwriting as that of my son-in-love.
It was not until I read my daughter’s full post that I understood.

Writing truth on these walls before we make this house a home. Giving this gift God has given us back to Him. He is so faithful and we are so thankful!

All I could say was, Amen!
All I could think of was the fact that their priorities are in order.
I imagined them taking the SOLD sign down off the front lawn and praying together.
I imagined they wrote the verses after they entered the house as the new homeowners.

It was not until I went over to their home to help my daughter that I really understood.
We wrote a verse on the wall in every room, she said.
Eventually all the walls will be painted but God’s Word was declared over every space.
I wanted to read the verses in each room, but it was a private thing they did together.

They made a declaration: This house is God’s house.
They are simply His tenants.
Food and fellowship will happen in this house as God allows.
When God gives them children, those children will be raised to know Him in this house.

Four walls and a roof make a house.
However, it is the foundation of the house that is vital to the structure.
From a builder’s perspective, the foundation is dug deep so that the house will stand.
From my daughter’s perspective, that foundation has already been laid in Jesus Christ.

My church just built a new sanctuary.
Before the mirrors were placed in all the bathrooms, the children were given a job to do.
They were given markers and invited to write something on the walls as a dedication.
Verses, praises, pictures, and words of thanksgiving were written there.

All of that writing was covered by the mirrors, but it is still there.
It is unseen to everyone else but God.
It is remembered by the children, who can tell you exactly where they wrote their message.
It is a standing stone for years to come proclaiming the faithfulness of our God.

I do not write on my walls, but I do have special places where I keep precious words.
Quotes that I read, snippets of things to ponder, verses that mean so much to me are kept there.
It is a treasure trove of truth.
It is a reference point on a dry day.

We all have dry days.
Dry days when even though we know the Lord is near, He feels far away from us.
Dry days when we need to be reminded of God’s promises and His Truth.
Dry days that without Living Water, we might forget the goodness of our God.

Those verses, quotes, and thoughts to ponder are like an oasis in the desert for me.
They are lush green in the dusty tan that is our lives on a dry day.
They are a drink of cool water when our throat is parched.
They are nourishment to us when we are famished for Truth.

A testimony was written on the walls of a house.
Messages from children were written on the walls of a bathroom.
A treasure trove of truth is tucked away in a special place for me to retrieve at any moment.
It is necessary every day but most especially on dry days.

Writing truth on these walls before we make this house a home. Giving this gift God has given us back to Him. He is so faithful and we are so thankful!

My daughter and her husband are right.
Their house belongs to God.
They are simply His stewards.
We all are God’s stewards of the gifts He has give to us.

Why don’t you grab a marker and do some of your own writing?
It all belongs to Him anyway.
