One Single Tear

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

My mother had two sisters.
One never married.
She was a professional woman her entire life; a legal secretary.
Though she never married, she was engaged, twice.

As I got older, I asked her about why she never married either of those men.
They were wonderful men, but I could never imagine spending my whole life with them.
The love was just not there.
She believed in the sanctity of marriage too much to enter it haphazardly.

The Connection

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

My husband and I were away for the weekend.
We went to see our son who lives in a nearby state.
Our son who graduated from law school.
Our son who just passed the bar exam.

The weekend had been planned for quite a while.
The news about passing the bar exam came earlier than expected.
We were thrilled; we are so proud of him.
A celebration, to be sure, once we arrived.

The Apron

When I am cooking in the kitchen, you will find me in a apron.
Not just any apron.
I love a certain kind of apron that I bought in Lancaster County.
The old fashioned kind of apron that covers well and has pockets in the front.

I have quite a few of these aprons.
With its homespun cloth, I am transported to a simpler time.
The long ties crisscross in the back and come around the front so I can tie them.
The pocket holds my glasses, which always come off when I read or do close work.

God’s Interface

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

Technology went along with me on my morning walk.
My youngest daughter has her fall break coming up in a few days.
I was trying to plan a time with all of my daughters together.
We decided that we would go to see a movie we all wanted to see.

It is next to impossible for me to text while I am walking.
I had my phone with me and I decided to use Siri like I have many times before.
Siri, by definition, is an intelligence personal assistant and knowledge navigator.
The application uses a natural language user interface to answer questions.

Face Time

Posted in Prayer | 2 Comments

There is always a “day after” kind of feeling when a birthday is over.
My daughter enjoyed a good birthday as we celebrated her on her special day.
A lovely way to mark the end of one year and the start of another.
The telling of the story, yet again, of the day that she was born.

Whose birth was the easiest?
Whose birth was the fastest?
Questions, innocent enough until they begin to tease each other about who is the favorite.
Relentless, even as adults; the child always tucked away in their hearts.

The Important Work

Posted in Prayer | 2 Comments

Our church is having VBS this week.
Vacation Bible School.
It is such a privilege to have children come through the doors to learn about Jesus.
It is such a joy to see their smiling faces.

There are always the few children who do not want to leave their Moms.
There are always the volunteers with their servant hearts who step in with love.
Apprehension turns to excitement when they see that one familiar face they can sit beside.
Within minutes of hugging their Moms, they are singing with smiles from ear to ear.

Vintage Phone

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

I love to go into antique stores.
I mostly like to browse and see all of the old things.
Sometimes I have something in mind that I am trying to find.
Such was the case this past week.

I was looking for a depression era mixing bowl.
There is a specific one I am trying to find.
The color I am looking for makes it a bit of a challenge to locate.
I am in no rush; I will find it eventually.

Kisses and Prayers

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

They hung on for dear life.
There at the terminal, despite the announcement that the plane was boarding.
They didn’t want to leave each other.
They didn’t know if this was the last time they would ever see each other again.

To watch them was to intrude.
This was their private moment.
This was their good bye.
For some who will not utter those words at that moment, this was, See you later.

God’s Grid

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

There is no power in our house.
We have been bombarded with snow for weeks.
Until now, the power has remained on through every storm.

This storm is different.
This storm has freezing rain and extensive ice.
Temperatures are hovering right below freezing, doing its damage.

I woke up and grabbed a shower before we lost power.
Candles and a flashlight illuminated the kitchen.
I ate a small breakfast by candlelight.

Heart To Heart Talk

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

How I love talking to people after church.
My church family is precious to me.
There is nothing better than hugs from the children as they show me their favorite toy.
There is nothing nicer than hearing their stories or whatever is on their hearts.

One little girl always wants to talk to me.
Her big smile and bright eyes melt my heart.
She wanted to come talk to the lady with the red lips, her mom said smiling.
She knows me and my lipstick well.
