Metamorphosis

More than twelve hours after we pulled out of the driveway, we pulled back in.
We pulled in with one less person.
The storage bins that were full are now empty.
The house feels bigger and much more quiet.

Or maybe that is just my heart.

It was a busy day, jam-packed with activities and meeting new people.
The Welcome Committee had the whole process down to a science.
I never saw such organization.
When a new student walked into the gym, the whole place cheered.

The Empty Nest

It was bound to happen.
Someone had to be the youngest.
Someone had to be the last one to go off to college.

You can never imagine this day when you hold your babies in your arms.
They are little and helpless and utterly dependent on you for everything.
Everything is new; everything is a first.

On The Other Side Of The Door

Ask any mother and she will tell you about the preciousness of a few minutes alone.
Alone just to gather your thoughts.
Alone to grab a shower in peace.
Alone to have a cup of tea and read a paragraph in a book uninterrupted.

Alone does not mean instead of being with her children.
Alone does not mean trading in motherhood for her single life again.
Alone does not mean that she loves her family any less.
Alone simply means stillness in the midst of busyness.

Rain Boots and Icy Drinks

I saw him out of the corner of my eye.
Movement, little boy movement.
A blur and then he was gone.
It was the sound of his footsteps that baffled me.

Quiet, yet with a bit of a clump-clump sound.
I turned around when contagious laughter filled the air.
It was now two little boys that I saw.
Brothers who looked so much alike yet one was obviously the leader.
