My youngest grandson is now two-years-old.
He is in a big boy bed.
Gone is the crib he slept in for two years.
Now he shares a room with his four-year-old brother.
Not only is he in a big boy bed, he is in a bunk bed.
His brother sleeps on the top bunk.
He sleeps on the bottom.
Dinosaur sheets and comforters complete the room.
I was with him the other day while my daughter helped out at school.
We literally read a dozen books together.
We sang songs.
I could see he was getting tired and the clock confirmed it was indeed nap time.
He led the way upstairs, holding his precious blanket while he climbed the stairs.
First, he wanted to show me where he used to sleep.
The closet in that room now has special toys, which he showed me as well.
It is also the place where his older brother has quiet time, while his brother takes a nap.
He looked so small in the bed, under his cozy dinosaur comforters.
I made a mental note that he would not be this little for long.
We sang, Jesus Loves Me, which is always the song they sing with Grandma.
Even as babies, I wanted them to know that Jesus loves them even more than Grandma.
The transition from crib to bed was an easy one.
He has three older siblings to watch.
The little ones always seem to do things faster than the sibling before them.
Watching. Imitation. Mastery.
What are they watching?
What are we watching?
What are they imitating?
What are we imitating?
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)
It matters who we follow.
It matters what we imitate.
Bunk beds are one thing.
Life choices are another.
I have decided
I’m gonna live like a believer
Turn my back on the deceiver
I’m gonna live what I believe
I have decided
Being good is just a fable
I just can’t ’cause I’m not able
I’m gonna leave it to the Lord
There’s a wealth of things that I profess
I said that I believed
But deep inside I never changed
I guess I’d been deceived
And a voice inside kept telling me
That I’d change by and by
But the Spirit made it clear to me
That kind of life’s a lie
I have decided
I’m gonna live like a believer
Turn my back on the deceiver
I’m gonna live what I believe
I have decided
Being good is just a fable
I just can’t ’cause I’m not able
I’m gonna leave it to the Lord
So forget the game of being good
And your self-righteous pain
‘Cause the only good inside your heart
Is the good that Jesus brings
And when the world begins to see you change
Don’t expect them to applaud
Just keep your eyes on Him and tell yourself
I’ve become the work of God
I have decided
I’m gonna live like a believer
Turn my back on the deceiver
I’m gonna live what I believe
I have decided
Being good is just a fable
I just can’t ’cause I’m not able
I’m gonna leave it to the Lord
(I Have Decided, by Michael Card)
If we are believers in Christ, we have the Lord Jesus to follow.
We do not follow Him in a vacuum.
We need the Spirit’s help to follow Jesus and imitate Him.
We must decide that we will follow Him no matter what, no matter the cost.
Maybe singing, Jesus Loves Me, to my grandchildren is more than appropriate.
It is necessary.
Children are watching us!
How are we doing?
