Indoor Walking
Posted in Daily Living 4 Comments
It is hot.
This week, the temperatures are in the high nineties.
The real feel temperature is over one hundred degrees.
This kind of weather is not my favorite.
I love cold weather.
I love the shorter days of winter.
I love being inside, reading a book, near the fireplace.
I know I am in the minority.
Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the spring and fall.
However, in Pennsylvania, we don’t have a true spring.
It is lovely for a short time and then it gets very hot rather quickly.
Fall, with its sweaters, jackets, colorful leaves, and pumpkin everything, is so wonderful.
I enjoy walking.
This weather is just too hot to enjoy my outdoor walk.
This morning, the temperature was already almost eighty degrees at 6:00 am.
And the humidity, well, that’s another story.
I don’t have to explain my preferences, but I will.
When you’re cold, you can always get warm with an extra layer or a cozy blanket.
When you’re hot, there is just no relief.
Your energy is drained and outdoor things take longer to complete.
So, as an answer to this, I got a walking app on my phone.
It is an indoor walking program that I really enjoy.
I can do the monthly plan, which is something different every day of the month.
Or I can pick and choose instructors and the duration of my walk.
There are strength training options, with fitness bands, to go along with many of the sessions.
Most days, I walk a mile outside in the early morning.
Then, I come in and walk another two miles using the walking app.
I also have a re-bounder on which I do one hundred jumps of various kinds.
It is a good routine.
I am so thankful to have the walking app during this heat wave.
I was thinking about my walking app.
I was pondering, as I usually do.
I am exerting myself with side steps, kicks, mini squats, kickbacks, and light jogging.
My heart rate goes up, and according to my Fit Bit, stays in the desired zone.
My breathing is faster.
My recovery is quick.
But, I am not getting anywhere.
I am staying in a small area of the finished part of our basement.
I walk two miles, as I can see on the TV screen and on my Fit Bit.
However, I have not left the room.
If I was outside, two miles would take me around my neighborhood twice.
Inside, my two miles are tracked, but I have not left the room.
I thought of a hamster on the wheel, going round and round but not getting anywhere.
I am getting fit in the confines of a small space.
It is what I expected when I signed up for this app.
It is what I need to add variety to my exercise.
It is something I am grateful for in this terribly hot weather.
It does all that I thought and more for my health.
Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. (Hebrews 12:1)
Just like with our physical exercise, we need endurance in our spiritual walk.
There are times when we feel like we are making progress.
There are times we feel like for every step forward, we are taking two steps backwards.
Like my indoor walking app, I’m making progress, but it appears as if I’m standing still.
Exercise is a tricky thing.
We have to stick with it in order to progress.
In our spiritual walk with the Lord, we cannot remain stagnant.
We keep moving, even if we only move in a small area.
There are benefits to movement.
Some benefits can be measured.
Some cannot.
However, in time, the benefits will be seen.
If I keep moving and exercising, I’m helping my joints, my heart, and my overall well being.
If I keep growing in the Lord, I find myself growing closer to Him.
There is an intimacy that grows and deepens over time.
Oh, the benefits of that…

Satisfying and refreshing. Encouraged.
Marilyn, I am delighted you were blessed by this Whisper.
