That Kind Of Relationship

Posted in Prayer | 2 Comments

I saw her sitting two rows in front of me.
She came into church with her daddy and her sister.
It was obvious that they were related.
It was in the eyes.

The youngest little girl turned back at one point.
Our eyes met.
She smiled.
I smiled back.

During one of the worship songs, that was more upbeat, she swayed to the music.
I couldn’t tell if she knew the words.
It was clear that the music spoke to her.
It spoke to me as well, pointing me to Jesus.

She reached up and grabbed her daddy’s hand.
It was just for a moment.
He looked down lovingly at her.
That was all she needed.

She pulled at her daddy’s sleeve.
He bent down and put his ear close to her.
She talked to him for just a moment.
The father stood tall again as his little daughter looked up at him lovingly.

When worship was over, and before the sermon was to begin, the little girl leaned over.
She touched her daddy’s sleeve and made a motion with her finger for him to bend closer.
He leaned over with his ear close to her.
She began to whisper something to him.

She was serious about whatever she was telling him.
He listened attentively with a smile on his face.
He listened and the little girl knew she was heard.
He took the time she needed.

I watched them.
It was so tender.
It was so easy for the little girl to talk to her daddy.
It was so right for him to listen to her.

I understand the love of God better by understanding the love between parent and child.
Granted, God’s love for us is so much more than the love we have for our children.
God loves His children perfectly and unconditionally.
We, fall short with our imperfections and conditions.

Family life, though imperfect, is an object lesson.
We can understand, in a small way, the love the Father has for us.
We think of how much we love our children.
We think of how we would literally die for them if it meant saving their life.

That is what God the Father did when He sent His Son, Jesus.
Jesus took on our flesh, but was without sin.
Jesus was tired, hungry, angry, weary…yet never sinned in any of those emotions.
Jesus understands what we are going through because He went through it.

A good father remembers what it was like to be little and can relate to his child.
Though imperfect, a father’s love is a powerful thing.
Perfect, the Father’s love is a wondrous thing.
We are loved by our Creator, the One in whose image we are made.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6,7)

That little girl had her father’s eyes.
That little girl knew that her father heard her and knew that he would answer.
That little girl had the kind of relationship that enabled her to tug on her daddy’s sleeve.
That little girl had a loving daddy who took the time she needed, no matter how small or trivial.

Abba, Father.
Daddy.
We, who are in Christ, have a loving Father that we can call, Daddy.
We are heard; Our Abba listens attentively to us.

No request is too small.
No problem is too big.
Nothing can hinder our Abba, Father, from caring for His children.
We have that kind of close relationship because of Jesus.

We are blessed beyond measure.

    • Marilyn, I am so delighted you were blessed. The little moments matter, and in those moments, we learn more about Him!
