One Day

Posted in Heaven | 2 Comments

I just pulled weeds in the mulch beds out front.
Then it rained.
The next day, when I went outside, I saw them.
Little tiny weeds were beginning to poke through.

The weeds are easy to pull, especially if you stay on top of them.
Sometimes, however, a feeling of futility has to be purposely squelched in my heart.
I just pulled these weeds, I said to no one in particular.
It did not matter; they were back again.

I dusted my furniture and all my bookshelves.
My duster was sprayed with the dust grabbing spray.
I set out to go over every surface.
No one notices but me.

However, it is spring.
The pollen count is high.
It is chilly now but the days when it was warmer, the windows were open.
A fine layer of yellow pollen dust was over everything that I just dusted a few days before.

I cleaned the glass table on our deck.
Shiny and ready to use, I went back into my kitchen.
Late that day, when I went outside, a thin yellow layer was on that surface as well.
I cleaned the table again and my paper towel was covered in pollen.

Some days it seems like we never get ahead.
We do the work we have to do and feel as if it has been sabotaged.
It feels as if there are forces at work to thwart our every attempt.
There are days when futility can set in.

Ask any mother with young children during the winter months.
She gets them bundled up in their snow pants, jacket, hat, and gloves.
Even though the question was asked before one item of clothing was put on, it still happens.
I have to go to the bathroom, her little child will say wiggling.

She undoes everything she just did.
She waits patiently until her child is finished.
She then repeats the process.
This time she doesn’t ask the question since she does not want to trigger a response.

Ask any father when he gets the car ready to drive on that family vacation.
Much like the snow pants fiasco, a long car trip will affect a child in the same way.
Not even on the highway, the call comes from the back seat.
I thought I told you to go before we left the house, is the usual reply.

It is inevitable that someone will walk across a newly washed kitchen floor.
It is a sure thing that when you wash your car, it will rain.
It is certain that when you go out wearing your old, comfy pants you will see everyone you know.
It is a fact that when you study for an exam, the one thing your did not study is on the test.

All you can do is laugh.
Sometimes you look around to see if a hidden camera is anywhere nearby.
Sometimes you are amazed that these kinds of things still surprise you.
That’s the way it is here.

But one day…

Righteousness will be his belt
and faithfulness the sash around his waist. The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. (Isaiah 11:5-10)

One day, all futility will be gone.
One day, everything broken will be repaired.
One day, everything wrong will be made right.
One day, Eden will be restored.

For those who are in Christ, that one day is certain.
Everything that has been upside down will be turned right side up.
Everything that has been lost will be found.
Mourning will turn to dancing.

One day.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:1-4)

One day, futility will not be a word we understand.
One day, sorrow will be forgotten.
One day, anger and strife will be thrown far away.
One day, enemies will be cast down and become a footstool for His feet.

One day.
Until then, we wait.
We believe and know that all God said in His Word is true.
One day our faith will be sight.

One day.

  1. What wonderful promises our God gives us to remember when our days are dark or difficult. I am so blessed to be a child of God who can look forward to One Day!
