A Unique Ceremony Of Unity

Posted in Marriage | 4 Comments

My youngest daughter got married last weekend.
She married her best friend.
She married someone who was part of their same friend group in college.
They had not dated until after they graduated.

They were just friends for the longest time.
The summer after graduation, my daughter was a mercy ministry intern in Philadelphia.
Soon we heard that this young man came to visit her a few times.
Just friends was beginning to change into more than friends.

The Man Who Worked In The Dairy Aisle

Posted in Marriage | 4 Comments

I knew him from the grocery store.
He was always so pleasant.
He was always easy to talk to, with a wide smile and a quick laugh.
I remember his ties.

He wore a button down shirt under his store apron.
He always wore colorful ties.
He had ties for different holidays.
He had ties for various occasions.

Nostalgia

My husband came up from the basement.
He had an apron on over his clothes.
Where did you get that apron? I asked him.
I’ve had it for about twenty years, he told me.

I’ve never seen it, I said emphatically.
That’s because you don’t come down to the basement while I’m working, he said.
I noticed a bit of nostalgia in his voice.
I knew what he was thinking.

Anniversary Memories

Posted in Marriage | 10 Comments

We had biology class together.
I was not scientifically gifted, though I was in the honors class just like him.
He was not gifted in writing and did not seem to enjoy reading the classics.
Yet, he was in the honors class with me.

He intrigued me.
He sat in the front of math class by choice.
I sat in the back of the room, hoping to hide.
I was not mathematically gifted either.

Unequivocally

Posted in Marriage | 2 Comments

My son graduated from law school four years ago.
After interviewing at many firms, he had decisions to make.
A firm in Washington, D.C. was his choice.
However, he made another decision before beginning to work there.

My son wanted to get federal court experience before working at the firm.
After much prayer, he deferred his position at the firm for one year.
He applied to many federal judges in different circuits across the country.
A judge in the sixth circuit chose him to be her clerk.

Grocery Store Flowers

I used to love Highlights For Children magazine.
I remember that magazine used to come in the mail when I was a girl.
I loved doing the puzzles and activities.
My favorite thing to do was the Hidden Pictures.

When I knew how to read the words myself, I enjoyed finding every item.
The scenes were always different.
The items to be found varied with each issue.
The concept was the same.

Extra Baggage

Posted in Marriage | 2 Comments

I met a friend for coffee.
Actually, she drank coffee.
I am in my late fifties and never even tasted coffee.
People find that hard to believe but it is true.

Tea is my drink of choice.
When we met at the little coffee shop, I chose iced tea instead.
We both had a cranberry scone.
Three hours later, we got up from the table.

It was appropriate that we were there.
The couple is very special to me.
I watched the unfolding of their love.

My youngest daughter was in the wedding.
The bride is a dear friend of hers.
All the bridesmaids love the Lord.
The bride asked the bridesmaids to stand with her in a unique way.

Love Birds

Posted in Marriage | 2 Comments

The back of our house faces south.
Our kitchen and family room stay shady until late morning.
I can open the blinds on my picture window near my sink and look out to the woods.
By noon, the sun is so bright, the blinds have to be tilted.

It was still early morning when I saw them.
I was looking for an owl that tends to come to the same branch right near the edge of the woods.
There was no owl but I was mesmerized by what I did see.
Two birds were perched side by side in a tall tree.

The Wedding By The Lake

Posted in Marriage | 4 Comments

It began the night before.
We all arrived at the wedding venue which was a rustic, working farm.
Beauty was everywhere I looked.
Wildflowers lined the paths; wooden fences and gates added the perfect backdrop.

There were horses, chickens, and even a large pig on the farm.
It was raining as we drove there.
The rehearsal was held in the barn; the pastor making do with the the temporary location.
Reality set in as I watched my son and his future wife prepare for the next day.
