Hammer and Nails

Posted in Holy Week | 2 Comments

I have a bulletin board on the wall over my desk.
Appointment cards are there, the Bible study schedule for the year, and other reminders.
Colorful push pins hold the various things in place.
Some things that are scheduled out for a few months have their place on the bulletin board.

It was not until I had to take my hair cut appointment card down that I noticed it.
After each month, I cross off the appointment on the printout the salon gave me.
At the top of the paper were numerous holes from the push pins.
I was not that careful about putting the pins back in the same place.

Cutting Trees

Years ago, when we were ready to move from our first house, we looked at many developments.
Searching for houses was usually something my husband and I did together.
I wanted to see a model house in a development that was yet to be built.
I went to see the model house by myself while my husband stayed home with our little girls.

I liked what I saw.
I liked the proposed neighborhood.
The house was in the school district that we wanted.
I left there thinking that this is the house for us.

Complicity

I was thinking about something I learned in a college sociology class.
It was something known as participant observation.
It is when the observer participates in ongoing activities and records their observations.
The observer is a “player” in the action.

I used to think it was like going undercover for a news story.
That was a simple explanation.
However, in my mind it enabled me to get my head around it.
The researcher would be able to get an “insider” viewpoint.

True Greatness

Anyone with more than one child has heard it before.
It is probably said by each child at least once.
It is more than likely said by one child more than the others.
I’m Mom’s favorite!

I have heard that on more than one occasion.
I have heard that by one child in particular.
I thought I nipped that statement in the bud years ago.
I read what John and Charles Wesley’s mother answered in response to that question.

Remembering A Balloon

When I was a girl, it was always a treat to take the train into the city.
Going into Philadelphia and shopping with my mother and my aunt was quite an excursion.
We would meet under the eagle in the Wanamaker’s store.
We would have lunch in Horn and Hardart’s restaurant with its revolving doors.

My mother and I would meet my aunt in the city.
She was a legal secretary for the law department and lived near the Art Museum.
It was expected that you would get dressed up when you go into the city.
It was expected that this would be an out of the ordinary kind of day.

Yikes And Yippee

A dear friend checked in with me this morning.
She sent a text knowing that I had been sick but was now on the mend.
I told her that I was feeling much better but was still coughing at night.
Rest and get well, dear heart, was her sweet reply.

I told her that I would try.
She was one of my prayer warriors that got me through the retreat where I was to speak.
Got your back, she reminded me.
And she does; and she knows that I have her back as well.

Beneath The Dirt

I sat in church on Easter morning with the fragrance of flowers all around me.
The tulips, hyacinths, and lilies in their colorful pots made me smile.
It is the season of spring, the season of flowers, the season of sweet fragrances.
I love color, so sitting there with the gorgeous colors before me blessed my heart.

I thought of the grower who cultivated the bulb so that we could enjoy the Easter flowers.
I was thankful for their tender care: nurturing, watering, and fertilizing to ensure growth.
I was thankful for the women in the church that made sure our church looked so beautiful.
My heart was full.

Remember Me

Posted in Holy Week | 2 Comments

What a privilege it is for me to teach women’s Bible study.
It is such a blessing to open the Word of God and dive into the riches we find there.
Some of us have been studying together for many years.
All of us have grown in love for our Lord and in the knowledge of Him.

We have been studying the book of Genesis this year.
We now find ourselves in the chapters about Joseph.
Joseph who was sold into slavery by his brothers.
Joseph who was wrongly accused of seduction and thrown in prison.

The Battle Of The Wills

Posted in Holy Week | 2 Comments

Decisions are not always easy.
When my children were toddlers, the first sign of autonomy was choosing their clothes.
In the beginning, I would give them two choices.
Do you want to wear this or this?

After a while, they were able to pick the outfit all by themselves.
That stage is always enjoyable to watch.
Rain boots on sunny days or a Woody hat and sheriff badge to the grocery store.
Their own personality was coming through their choices.
