The One In The Glass

Posted in Bible | Leave a comment

I have an Audible account and absolutely love it.
I am a voracious reader.
I used to love to read aloud to my children and now to my grandchildren.
Being read to, as I listen to a book on Audible, is just so wonderful.

I have listened to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit as well.
I have listened to all the James Herriot books.
I have listened to classics like Jane Eyre and most of the Jane Austen books.
However, my favorites were book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote Anne of Green Gables.

The Name On The Library Card

Posted in Heaven | Leave a comment

What a day it was when I walked into the library in my hometown and got my library card.
Signing the card, in the presence of the librarian, made me feel so grown up and so proud.
I carried that card in my little girl wallet as if I was carrying valuable treasure.
Words my mother had said  so often rang in my ears.

You are never without a friend when you have a book to read.
Those words came to mind only last week, when I said them to my oldest granddaughter.
What does that mean, Grandma?
It means you’re never lonely, and the characters in the books become your friends.

Choosing A Pair Of Shoes

Posted in Evangelism | 2 Comments

When I was a little girl, getting new shoes was so exciting.
Those were the days of shoe stores and small benches with an incline on which to put your foot.
Those were the days of shoe salesmen who went to the back room to bring out the size you needed.
The mysterious back room, from which boxes of every shoe you could desire, came.

The shoe salesman removed your shoe and actually put the new shoe on your feet.
You had to wear socks or tights for sanitary reasons.
You could never try on shoes if you were barefoot.
To this day, I still hold onto those same rules.

A Bouquet Of Leaves

A local theatre company, offers wonderful productions throughout the year.
I have seen quite a few shows there and have been amazed at the talented performances.
I especially love the fall productions when they are geared even more towards children.
Last fall, I took three of my granddaughters to see Cinderella.

This year, I took two of my granddaughters to see Mary Poppins.
My two older daughters and I couldn’t wait to see their faces.
The girls know the story and the songs by heart.
I saw my oldest granddaughter walking towards me wearing her own Mary Poppins hat.

The Craft Project

Posted in Faith | 2 Comments

I got a text from my oldest daughter who is watching her two nieces this weekend.
It was a picture of my four year old granddaughter with a craft in front of her.
It was something she made all by herself.
She wanted Grandma to see it.

Of course, my response was effusive praise.
How beautiful!
I’m so proud of you!
What an artist you are!

Skylights

Posted in Faith | Leave a comment

I am not a fan of skylights.
It is an odd thing to say when we have two sets of skylights in our house.
One set of skylights is in our family room.
The other set is in our bathroom upstairs.

If truth be told, I do enjoy the bathroom skylights at night.
I am quite partial to the moon and can follow its waxing and waning in those skylights.
I can notice when the moon is hidden by the clouds for a bit.
I can see the stars.

A Life Well Lived

People think about getting older.
Some struggle with the number of the age itself.
Some look back and see unfulfilled dreams.
Some look forward and wonder if the best years are behind them.

A woman often doesn’t realize advancing age is happening.
She’s busy raising her children.
She’s busy marking their milestones.
She’s busy.

Encouragement On The Sidelines

It was a full weekend of grandchildren activities.
Actually, two full weekends.
First, it was the sweet dedication at church of our youngest granddaughter.
Then, it was a soccer game for our four year old and a quarter mile race for our kindergartner.

Our son asked us if we would like to be up in front with them at the dedication.
It was a privilege to have grandparents standing with parents as promises were made.
Promises to come alongside the parents as they raise this child to know and love the Lord.
Promises to teach this little one about Jesus when she is with us in our home as well.

The Missing Oreo Piece

All of our toys are now being used by the next generation.
Even with five children, it is amazing that we still have all the pieces to our games.
We still have all the Fisher Price Little People sets intact.
We still have the Fisher Price dollhouse and all its accessories.

We still have the play kitchen with all the pretend food.
We still have the dishes, teacups, and spoons from all those years ago.
We still have the tea bag that goes into the tea kettle.
We still have all the toppings that go on the pizza.

Could You Stay A Little Longer?

Posted in Faith | Leave a comment

We are not made for the dark.
Children will do their best to prolong bedtime so that the lights do not have to be turned off.
We scramble for flashlights if the power goes out during a storm.
Things look vastly different when they are not seen in the light.

My husband teases me and tells me that I must have “cat eyes.”
He does not understand how I am able to see in the dark.
He doesn’t know that I count steps and can maneuver in that way.
He doesn’t seem to understand when I say, just look for the light.
